Self-awareness is a life-long process that needs to be nurtured. If you are new to this, here are some things you can do to incorporate mindful living into your life. If you’re a veteran, there might be a few things you haven’t thought about trying or have been meaning too.
1. I practice yoga several times a week, but you can choose other forms of mindful practice such as tai chi or reiki. Whatever form of energy work you choose, commit to practicing at least three or four times a week for optimal calmness.
2. Mindful walking is also a great way to become in tuned to your body. Try taking deep breathes from deep within your diaphragm (also known as base breathing) as you walk. Not only does this relaxes you, but it helps clear your mind.
3. Meditation reigns supreme in clearing your mind of clutter, finding your inner voice and listening to your first attention. There are many types to choose from – guided, independent to focused meditations. Lately, I’ve been using Calm, an iOS app. It has several different guided meditations targeting various aspects of your life, and some free ones to get you started. I especially like the bedtime stories to help set the mood for a restful sleep.
4. Practice base breathing to relieve stress and become more in-tune to your body. When you focus on breathing deeply from your diaphragm, you calm your mind and body. You can do this while walking or in a seated position. Take a deep breath through your nose and fully expand your lungs. Hold your breath for a second and then exhale slowly through your mouth. Try taking six deep breaths daily to get started. You’ll notice that your thoughts are clearer and you feel more energized.
5. Keep a journal where you can write down your intentions is a powerful tool for creating the life you want. This is where you state to the Universe exactly what you want in life If you want to go back to school to become a nurse or work in finance, make your intentions known and follow up with actions that will manifest your goals. It’s also a powerful way to manifest energy for your goals because writing with intention gives you focus and clarity. One thing to remember is that journaling is not the same as keeping a diary. A diary is more of a record of your life as it happens. Journaling is about reflecting on your life, examining your emotions and discovering realizations as you grow consciously. The best part of journaling is that it can be adapted to suit your needs. It can be done on a mobile device or handwritten. The idea is to find your quiet space where you can quiet the chatter of your internal dialogue and listen to your inner voice.
6. Volunteering …there is something special about sharing a passion and working on a cause or helping someone in need. The energy you gain from doing something selfless is priceless. Need ideas on how to begin volunteering? Try these websites to get started and check local free weeklies in your area. They are usually full of ads requesting help or announcing an event.

7. Affirmations are where you voice to the Universe and yourself what you intend is true. They redirect your thoughts in a positive way. Ex. I am a pediatric nurse at xx hospital, and I’m living my dream. Intentions and affirmations work together to manifest your life as you have created it. You don’t need to know how you are going to achieve it. All you need to focus on at this point is that is the goal you’ve sent out to the Universe. You will notice that once you voice with intent, doors and opportunities will start to open that you previously thought were closed to you.
Remember, you’ll never get what you want unless you voice your intentions to the Universe and follow that with action. So, what are some things you do to live mindfully?
